Visual + Performing Arts
+ ART 1
This course is designed to acquaint students with the techniques, philosophies, and history of art. Students create their own art while learning about famous artists and art terms. By the end of this course, students will have gained a new appreciation and knowledge of art.

Eligibility: 9th-12th grade
+ ART 2
This course is designed to continue the student’s knowledge of techniques, philosophies, and history of art. Students create advanced art projects while learning about famous artists, art movements, and art terms. By the end of this course, students will have expanded their appreciation, knowledge, and studio skills.
Prerequisite: Art I with a grade of C or better or teacher referral only.
Eligibility: 10th-12th grades
+ STUDIO ART (H)
Students demonstrate their serious commitment to the practical experience of art through the development of a portfolio. The portfolio addresses three major concerns that are constant in art - quality, concentration, and breadth. Students complete work in class and at home.
Prerequisite: Art 2 and teacher recommendation.

+ AP STUDIO ART: DRAWING
The AP Studio Art portfolios are designed for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of art. AP Studio Art is not based on a written exam; instead, students submit portfolios for evaluation at the end of the school year. The AP Studio Art Program consists of three portfolios — 2-D Design, 3-D Design and Drawing — corresponding to common college foundation courses.

+ ORNAMENTAL HORTICULTURE
This course allows students to apply an artistic approach to floral design. Students will explore elements and principles of design, two or three dimensional designs, history of floral art, arrangement styles and techniques, seasonal, holiday and occasional designs. Students will achieve this through creating, designing, identifying, explaining and evaluating all topics of study. In addition, all students will learn various types of cut and potted foliage, potted flowering plants, fresh flowers, tools, materials, display techniques, cut flower care and wedding consulting.

+ INTRODUCTION TO GRAPHIC DESIGN
This course provides an introduction to basic concepts of graphic design such as color theory, composition and layout, perspective and typography in the context of creating computer graphics. Our primary graphics creation tool is Photoshop CS6. It is a multi-layered, robust graphical illustrator and photo editor. We will also use Adobe Illustrator, Adobe In Design, and a few free iPad apps.

+ DIGITAL VIDEO PRODUCTION
This course is designed to introduce and familiarize students with video production that includes the following: camera work, script writing, audio, editing, and producing. The course entails completion of group projects involving campus life and may include promotional videos. Each student will gain hands-on experience of single camera (film style) productions. No prior experience is required to attend certain activities outside of the regular school day.

+ BAND SECTIONAL
This is a course for students who are enrolled in Advanced Band. Students will get one-on-one help with their band music, solo music, and music theory.
+ BEGINNING BAND
This course is designed to help beginners and maturing musicians get better at their instruments. The goal of this class is to move students into the Advanced as soon as possible. Students will get one-on-one help to learn or improve their skills on their instrument.
+ ADVANCED BAND
The advanced band class is for students who have a minimum of 1-2 years of experience on any band instrument (flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, percussion). Their technique should be at the intermediate level or higher. The class meets daily, working on fundamentals and ensemble music. We work on different genres throughout the year. The band performs quite a few concerts in the year, including a Fall, Christmas, Jazz, and Spring concert. Students in the band have opportunities to audition for county festivals.
+ PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE
This course is designed to help beginner percussionists get better. The goal of this class is to move them into the Advanced Band as soon as they're ready.
+ SHOW CHOIR
Show Choir is an open course offered to all students. This course is designed to increase the vocal skills and performance levels of each student by presenting a rigorous repertoire from various historical periods and cultures. Students will sing a wide range of literature such as Musical Theatre, Pop, Jazz, and Folk. From the study of these various styles, students will attain enhanced awareness of the history and events surrounding the development of choral literature. Correct stylistic performance and interpretation of the different repertoires will be emphasized. Students will also learn creativity, grace, and confidence through various forms of dance. Students will choreograph and perform in class.
Prerequisite: Singing background, auditions may be required

+ GUITAR 1
An elective class that teaches the basic techniques of playing the guitar in all styles of music. This class teaches the student music theory, rhythms, chord structures, and integrates all elements learned toward the application of leading worship, and playing songs. This class divides into two sections towards the middle of the year. Section 1 is basic guitar soloing techniques and Section 2 is classical and flat-picking techniques.

+ THEATER 1
Theater focuses on the student’s artistic perceptions, creative expression, and understanding of historical contributions and cultural dimensions of the arts. Students analyze, respond to, and make judgments about works in the arts.

+ THEATER 2
These courses are an extension of Theater 1. They are designed to enhance skill levels in all areas through continued exploration of themes in previous courses. The student is given increasingly difficult material to explore, taken from classic and modern theatre, as well as film. Student emphasis will be on acting, directing and writing with some technical theater and theater history as well. The primary aim is to emulate the style of professional actors workshops.
Prerequisites: C or better in Theater 1. This course may be repeated as course content alternates each year.

+ THEATER 3
Theatre 3 & 4 are Honors level performance based classes leading students through the collaborative process of playmaking and advanced character development. Students receive conservatory style training in acting, movement and voice and showcase their growth through performances and the CSUB Theatre festival. Students learn to interpret plays dramatically, to analyze plot, genre and themes of dramatic literature. These courses include a study on a variety of contemporary acting techniques and methods from teachers including Konstantin, Stanislavski, Uta Hagen, Viola Spolin, and others. Emphasis will be placed on advanced acting exercises, physical and vocal awareness, and practical application of techniques and theories. Class will include exercises in movement, improvisation, character development, vocal expression, concentration, and text analysis. In this course, students will use critical thinking skills to collaborate, communicate, persevere, direct, and lead. This class will require some after school rehearsals and will have mandatory, graded, performances for all class members. Students in this course are required to audition or work tech for extra-curricular productions.
+ THEATER 4 (H)

+ TECHNICAL THEATER AND PRODUCTION
This course provides a thorough introduction to all aspects of technical theater: stagecraft, lighting, prop manufacturing, sound, set painting, and computerized show control. Balancing hands-on work with lecture, this course seeks to familiarize students with the tools of the theatre technician's craft. Additionally the course provides each student with the opportunity to design a set for a theoretical production. Each student is required to work on the crew of at least one performing arts production during the year.
Prerequisites: Theater 1 or permission of the instructor. This course may be repeated as course content changes each year.

+ 21ST CENTURY YEARBOOK DESIGN & PUBLICATION
In Journalism/Yearbook, students will be trained to create clearly written print journalism and photojournalism stories on deadline in areas of Christian spirituality, academics, athletics and club activities at BCHS. Students will acquire practice writing stories weekly and creating photojournalism pieces while receiving detailed guidance and feedback throughout the process from their instructor. Writing assignments will mirror the types of assignments covered by local, state and national news organizations such as live events, feature articles, and other events. Students will be given the opportunity to cover regular column assignments while brainstorming new story ideas and feature articles.
