Considering the Past, Contemplating the Future
Many years ago, in a school district not so far away, I began my career as a history teacher. My passion was not just in teaching historical facts, rather exploring the intricate cause-and-effect relationships that have shaped our world. There is profound wisdom in the adage, “Those who can’t remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Understanding why events happened is as crucial as knowing what events happened. This understanding of the past enriches our perception of the present and guides our vision for the future.
This year, we reflected on our past as we celebrated the 20th anniversary of our campus at Stockdale + Allen. We reconnected with alumni, parents and supporters, revisiting the pivotal time when, after 25 years of moving from one location to another, God blessed us with a permanent home for BCHS. This is a story of unwavering faith, a testament to a dedicated community that trusted in the Lord and each other to establish a Chrisitan high school where God is honored. Our campus stands as a beacon, providing students with the facilities and resources to help them soar - academically and spiritually.
There are many lessons we can learn from our school’s past. The first is that our school was founded on prayer and the goal of providing families with an educational experience that shares the love of Christ with its students. The educational landscape then was much different from today, but when we consider the increasing demand from families seeking to enroll their students, we are resolved to stay true to our mission. BCHS has been blessed with a reputation for academic and extracurricular excellence over the last twenty years, but we recognize our strength is found not in college acceptance rates or CIF championships, but in the Lord to whom we seek to honor in everything we do (Isaiah 40:31).
It is also important to remember that BCHS’ existence is due to God’s sustaining grace, provided through the generosity of men and women who freely gave their gifts and talents to build the school. BCHS does not receive outside funding, so from its beginnings through today, we rely on one another to ensure our students have everything they need to succeed. This was evident at the Key Event this year, where the Eagle family, both past and present, came together to meet the challenge from a generous donor who promised to match every dollar raised, resulting in a total blessing of three million dollars. The intent of the Key Event is to raise money to support our need-based tuition assistance program. As a result of this generosity, we are looking at a record-breaking freshmen class and unparalleled enrollment overall.
What made the Key Event additionally special was the gathering of people from our past, present and future. We gave thanks for what God has done through BCHS and heard from current staff and students about the impact being made every day on campus. We also took a moment to ponder the road ahead and consider what the next twenty years will look like. As our campus ages, new needs surface daily. As our student body grows, new facilities are needed to accommodate the growth. And as the world continues to change, the need for faith-based education becomes more prevalent and the need to provide our students with opportunities and resources to succeed only intensifies.
The road ahead looks much like it did 20 years ago. Our mission to honor God remains constant, and the assistance needed to help our students soar continues. Remembering how we reached this point in our school’s history better equips us to move forward into the next twenty years. I am excited to partner with you as we take the next steps down that road.
